Recipe Variations
If you prefer using vegetable broth instead of water, replace half the water with vegetable broth.
If you are not vegetarian or vegan, add some meat to it. A salty cod fish is my preferred meat to add to this split pea soup.
Add flavorless protein powder for even more protein. Here is the all-plant protein powder I use. I love it because it is truly tasteless and adds 10 grams of protein to this meal when adding one serving. It’s one of my go-to ways to add more protein to soups, pancakes, and smoothies.
Cooking Variations: Make Your Split Pea Soup In a Crockpot!
Throw everything in a crockpot and let it cook on low overnight or while you’re out running errands or at work.
Both the cassava (yuca) and split pea soup can be prepared on the stovetop, in a crock pot, or in an instant pot.

Notes + Tips To Make This Vegan Split Pea Soup Recipe Even Easier
Pro tip: Meal prep in advance and serve next day for a comforting thick soup. Who would have though meal prepping would make a meal taste even better!
This split pea soup only uses water and seasonings. Hot off the stove it will be a runny soup (9 cups). Let is cool and then put in air tight container overnight in the fridge, it thickens to my preferred consistency. I usually prepare this soup a day in advance and enjoy a really comforting thick soup. It also freezes well.
This split pea soup recipe adds cassava (yuca) to it for some additional yummy comforting goodness. It’s optional, but well worth it to add it to the soup. If you are low carb, I would leave it out or use a very small amount.
What Is Cassava/Yuca?
In the United States cassava is usually called yuca. Cassava is a buttery, starchy, root vegetable that I grew up eating. It is commonly used in Caribbean food dishes as well as Latin American cuisine.
I actually get mine in a large 5 lb bag in the frozen food section at Walmart. It lasts forever and a little goes a long way.
How to Cook Cassava
Cassava, or yuca, has a wonderfully soft and buttery texture. It is usually paired with big bold flavors like salt fish (salted cod fish) and tomato choka and is always lightly seasoned.
It is very easy to prepare, frozen or fresh. All you do is fill a stock pot with water (enough to completely submerge the cassava. Add salt. Once boiling add cassava, yuca, and boil until completely tender. Usually 20-30 minutes. That’s it.
Nutritional Value of Green Split Peas
This recipe calls for green split peas. Super nutritious. High fiber. Extremely filling. These are a few of my favorite things.
It is also rich in B vitamins, magnesium, and a great option if you are watching your cholesterol. A really delicious soup that is packed with great healthy benefits.
